The Foundation for Daviess County Public Schools is pleased to announce a partnership with First Security Bank in providing funding for the Learning Zone Tutorial Program in conjunction with the Baptist Mission Center and the Sorgho community.

In 2012, Sorgho Elementary School and community leaders created the Sorgho Community Awareness Committee. The Learning Zone Tutorial Program grew out of the conversations that began with this committee.

According to Dr. Vicki Riley, Elementary Director with DCPS, Sheila Cobb, director of the Baptist Mission Center had been searching for several years to find a way to bring tutoring to the mission. SES and the mission joined forces to provide tutoring two days per week after school for elementary through high school students. The students are able to complete homework and receive a hot meal.

The only missing piece was funding necessary to pay a director to collect homework from teachers, coordinate activities and keep up with students in the program. Sheila Cobb has volunteered her time this semester to perform these responsibilities.

With the funds provided by First Security Bank, an employee of Sorgho Elementary School will be hired to contact teachers regarding homework assignments, coordinate volunteer tutors, plan activities, and make sure all students leave with a parent or guardian following each after school session.

The Learning Zone tutoring Program is part of Superintendent Saylor's Great Expectations plan for the district that incorporates involving business partners in educating their future employees and customers and our community's future leaders.

Sorgho Elementary School, Daviess County Public Schools and the Foundation for DCPS greatly appreciate First Security Bank's generous donation to the Learning Zone Tutorial Program.
